The Injury Control Center- Uganda (ICCU) together with Safekids Uganda launched the Child Injury Prevention Report on 11th December 2009 in Uganda
The main objective of the launch was to raise awareness about the magnitude, risk factors of the problem of childhood injuries and to provide preventive measures for them. The WHO and UNICEF funded the launch with USD6000. The launch drew key stakeholders in injury prevention and these include; Ministry of Health, Ministry of Works and Transport, National Council for Children, Ministry of Gender, Arrive Alive Uganda, School Children, Teachers, CoRSU (Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda), Spinal Injury Association, Mulago Hospital, Media, Rotary Club of Kampala, The Road Journal, Traffic Police, Uganda National Roads Authority, Uganda Red Cross among other dignitaries. The launch comprised of Presentations by ICCU, Mulago Burns Unit, CORSU, and Sunrise Nursery and Primary School, a Documentary on Children and Injuries, Key note address from WHO Representative, Brief Remarks from UNICEF representative, Open Discussion on the way forward, Awards giving, an exhibition, cocktail and the prime of the event which was the “Launch of the WHO Report on Child Injury Prevention.” The Guest of Honor, Dr. Sam Zaramba (Director General-Health Services) was represented by Dr. Stanley Bubikire (Head of Disability Department- Ministry of Health) to whom Dr. Geoffrey Bisoborwa (representing Dr. Joaquim Saweka of WHO) handed over the WHO Report. UNICEF was represented by Head of Communications. Mr. Chulho Hyun.
Child passenger safety program
A team from the Injury Control Center- Uganda and Safekids Uganda did a survey in 38 Nursery schools (August 2009), and 3005 children were observed with an objective to identify and assess risk factors associated with child passenger pre-schoolers in Uganda.
