The ICC –U has the below outstanding achievements in the 5 areas of their strategic plan:

  1. RESEARCH
  2. TRAINING
  3. ADVOCACY
  4. COMMUNITY INTERVENTIONS
  5. SURVEILLANCE

A. RESEARCH

 Domestic Violence and Injury
ICC-U carried out research on Domestic Violence and Injury in Fort portal. This was conducted in 5 health facilities (3 hospitals and 2 health center 4). An activity report was written and data sets are available at the ICC-U

Burns Research
This was done in Lacor hospital. A tool was designed and data collected. Monitoring and evaluation were also done on the data collected to establish the risk factors associated with burns in Lacor. An activity report was compiled.

Peace Building
Surveillance was done in schools in Northern Uganda and data collected on violence in these schools. 2 trainings were conducted in which 65teachers (including 20 female) were trained in peace building after which they incorporated peace in the school curriculum. 2 activity reports were compiled and data be found at the ICC-U

B. TRAINING

First Aid Training
The Injury Control Center- Uganda conducted first aid trainings which is a component of the Pre- hospital Care Program. This training is vital form of secondary prevention aimed at providing immediate care to road traffic incident victims at the scene. The first respondents at the accident scenes, that is; lay persons, police officers and Local Council leaders along Jinja, Entebbe and Masaka highways were taken through first aid training and first aid boxes were distributed to police stations along the highways. 37 market vendors (including 9 female), 225 trainees from among police and lay persons. 18 first aid boxes were distributed to the police stations along the 3 highways. We believe the people’s capacity to save lives was enhanced.

Trauma Team Training
Trauma care capacity was developed in Mbale and Lacor hospitals. In total 38 health workers were trained in trauma care (20 from Mbale including 12 female and 18 from Lacor including 13 female) and 20 instructor health workers were trained from both regions. It is no doubt health workers in these regions are better equipped to attend to emergency cases.

C. ADVOCACY

  • Owing to the predominance of road traffic injuries, Injury Control Center-Uganda (ICC-U) held a press conference on 14th October 2009 to present what they intend to do in “Supporting road traffic victims on the scene through building capacity of Traffic Police and lay persons.” This was a launch of the Highway Training for the first respondents at the scene of the accident.

D. COMMUNITY INTERVENTIONS

  • - Nursery children’s passenger safety project • Safekids Uganda together with Injury Control Center-Uganda (ICC-U) carried out an observational survey on children going to nursery school (Pre-primary) to assess the risk factors associated with child passengers versus child pedestrians regarding road traffic incidents. Of the 3005 children observed from a total of 38 nursery schools, the children were noted to use three means of transport; (48.4%) walked to school, (40.1%) used vehicles, and (11.8%) used motorcycles. The survey revealed that many parents, teachers and even children are greatly lacking in the practice of road safety making the risk of the children falling victim to road traffic incidents really high. The team is still working on a Child Road Safety Program that will be implemented in 19 of the schools observed before the school term closes in December 2009.

F.SURVEILLANCE:

  • - The ICC-U conducts injury surveillance in hospitals and communities thus taking the leadership role in systematic injury surveillance in Uganda.

  • - The Hospital based injury surveillance aims at determining the causes, severity, and outcomes of injuries in rural and urban hospitals in Uganda. Surveillance enables critical areas to be highlighted for further research, policy development and emergency services.

  • - The injury surveillance system has been in operation in 5 hospitals in 4 regions (central, eastern western and northern) covering districts of (Kampala, Mukono, Jinja Mbale, Fort Portal, Mbarara and Gulu).

  • - The hospital based surveillance system has involved the setting up of trauma registries (TR) in out patient and causality departments. The trauma registries are regarded as potential source of data for local injury surveillance. Community surveillance has taken place in Gulu and more communities are being identified for surveillance.
