![]() Safekids Uganda is a coalition of Safekids Worldwide, whose headquarters are in Washington, DC, United States of America. Safekids Worldwide is the only international non- governmental organization that is devoted exclusively to prevention of accidental injuries among children 14 years and below. Safekids Uganda joined the safekids family in January, 2003. Uganda is the second African country, after South Africa to join the Safekids Worldwide network. ![]() Worldwide, hundreds of children are injured, killed and/or disabled from injuries at school, in homes, on the roads and even in war. In 2002, there were nearly, 750,000 children killed from childhood injuries and million of them injured worldwide. According to ICCU community survey, the top three causes of severe injuries among urban children less than 20 years in Uganda are traffic (46%), falls (14%) and burns (11%). In Uganda, about 400 children die, and about 1200 are seriously injured on our roads every year (Transport Research Laboratory, 2004). According to hospital trauma registries in Uganda, children aged 5-15 years are the second to the adults 25-44 years most affected age group in injury cases. By occupation, school children top the list of the group most likely to be injured, while schools were found to be the most common place where injuries occur. Uganda has a population of about 30 million people, and more than 50% of them are under the age of fifteen, however, this age group is likely to be wiped out if nothing is done to control the childhood injuries. Since most of the childhood injuries are preventable, Safety Promotion is of the strategies to safeguard the lives of our children. Safekids Uganda Activities include: Education: Children have been sensitized on road safety in schools. Teachers in schools have been trained in first aid, and in basics of injury prevention and control. Children have also been sensitized during the National Road Safety Campaign. Empowerment: The school traffic wardens have been sensitized on road safety, as well as parents. The local councilors have been made aware of the child injury burden and empowered to take the lead role in this campaign. Environment safety: The quality of children’s lives around and within schools has been improved. Speed humps and zebra crossings have been put in place. Evaluation: Research is ongoing on child safety and the environment. Safety Audits have been conducted. Through the earlier safety audit on school environments, an intervention of speed hump and zebra crossing has been constructed. Injured children at that point have reduced from between 3-5 to Zero at this point in time. This is a great achievement for child safety work in Kawempe. A study is underway to evaluate the traffic injury burden among pedestrian children, and the access to care of the injured children in schools. This has been facilitated by the Hospital for Sick Children, Canada Enactment: Advocacy campaigns on road safety, safety guidelines and standards are underway. The National Road Safety Campaign has spearheaded this cause. The National Curriculum Development Council is working together with ICC-U on developing a School Road Safety Curriculum. ![]() Safekids Uganda has been sponsored by the following organizations: 1.
