Previous/Outstanding Activities:- The center was involved in the testing of the International Classification of External Causes of Injury (ICECI), one of the few African centers to act in this capacity. Also, it is the first center in sub Saharan Africa (with the exception of South Africa), to have a systematic Trauma Registry.
- The center was involved in development of WHO injury surveillance guidelines
- The center has acted as a technical support for the ministry in mainly injury surveillance training, implementation and supervision (part of the Ministry of Health intergrated Disease Surveillance
- The center has hosted an increasing number of local and international elective students who have conducted research in burns, injury severity measurement, appropriate trauma care system and traffic injury and safety for vulnerable road users.
- The center worked on the section of injuries in the present Health Management Information System, and in the establishment of Rapid Response Teams at the district level.
- The Center provided expertise in the development of a landmines awareness strategy, together with the Disabilities and Rehabilitation section
- A peace building project was implemented in Gulu district as a concerted public health response to the rampant violence in Northern Uganda. It targeted children at their formative stages of development. (Government has taken it over)
- Injury control advocacy groups (clubs) were established in 40 elementary schools in Kawempe division – Kampala district with the main aim of promoting safety within schools and disseminating injury prevention information to the households.
- The ICC-U has also been involved in improving the access to care by targeting pre-hospital and emergency hospital based care
- Pre-Hospital Care:
ICC-U set out to train 40 first responders to victims of road traffic crashes in pre-hospital (first aid) skills along Entebbe high way. The training took place at Hotel Florida, Zana.
The pre-hospital care workshop was a response to the national road safety campaign involving road safety concerned partners including Ministry of Works and Transport, Uganda National Road Authority, Uganda Police, Uganda Red Cross Society and Injury Control Center – Uganda.
The training course included both practical and theoretical skills. Topics covered included; scene management, extrication, moving casualties, the ABCDE, splinting, triage, first aid kit usage. To add value to the training, peace topics of conscience, empathy, self-control, fairness and kindness were included.
The participants on average passed with great skills and knowledge, and this was demonstrated through the pre and post- test evaluations done during the course of the training. The participants will be monitored over time to establish their experiences in the community.
